Trouble Starting Excel (new issue)

Hi,

Somebody at my job had a problem when they opened excel 2002. Our
manager spent some time and fixed the issue, but to test us, he messed
with our machines as well. He can apparently duplicate the issue at
will.

What happens is that when you open excel it says "the file is in an
unrecognizable format" of course we are not trying to open a file, just
the application. When you click ok, a million things open. Figuring it
was as simple as clearing all macros, we checked the obvious XLstart
folder, add-ins and even cleaned the reg keys that have to do with
customization. We also searched for other posts and we followed all the
advice by clearing the "start these programs" etc.

I have no idea why other things are opening when there is nothing in
any folder to tell it so. Please help.

Thank you

Any chance that he fooled with the shortcut to excel.
x:\pathtoexcel\excel somefilenotanxls.xxx

When you checked the registry, did you look under the Open keys?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\Options
(look for OPEN, OPEN1, OPEN2, etc.)

And did you look under Tools|Addins (I could get that message once, but then
excel knew not to load it). So this can't be it.

I didn't try that originally but i just checked and there is nothing in
there that says open. I also didn't use any shortcuts. i clicked right
on the executable in the office folder. Thanks though, anyhelp is
good.

You sure it wasn't:

"at startup, open all files in:" <xl2002 wording>
"Alternate Startup File location" <before xl2002 wording>

Under tools|Options|General Tab.

That opening files on the root sounds like it matches exactly.

Most people leave this box empty.
