Trouble Uploading

S

Stuart233

I use microsoft frontpage to upload my content to my site. But I recently
have gotten an error right after things have been uploaded saying "The server
could not complete your request". Then the uploading process cancelled. It
mentioned to contact my web hosting administrator.

My web hosting service mentioned frontpage has trouble uploading large
files. I can upload fine when making changes small changes. But when I had
tried uploading a .wmv 27 MB video file, that's when I get the error. I have
uploaded slightly larger video files in the past however.

The error details were given as follows:

406 Not Acceptable
Not Acceptable An appropriate representation of the requested resource
/_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe could not be found on this server.

There is normally a 1mb limit to file uploads, unless the host changes it
and allows more.

Hi Stuart,

As Tom mentioned see if your host has a "cap" on file sizes being uploaded.

You could also try opening your live site and trying to "import" the file
and see if that works.

Also you could try using ftp CAUTION! Doing it with ftp is normally not
recommended on a site that has the FrontPage extensions installed on it..as
doing so can corrupt the extensions. However if you try sending via ftp to a
folder that has nothing else in it, you might be safe. Proceed though at
your own risk! :)

As indicated by others the default limit on many hosted servers is 1 MB max
- it can be changed by the host, but most hosts do not know how
(and on shared hosting they don't want to change it)

In your FP Site Move all your large media files (over 1 MB ) into a folder (name say Media), and verify all the links are correct
The right click that folder and convert it to a subweb
Then in your online site in FP create an empty folder named the same and convert it to a subweb
- Use FTP or any Upload tool your host has to upload Just the media files to the new subweb (folder)

Then Publish your local root web (w/o subwebs) to your online server

Don't open either of the subwebs (local or remote) in FP

Thank you for your help.
I verified with my web hosting and they said they did not have a limit on
uploads.
The error I recieved, which said /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe could not be
found. It is a part of Frontpage extensions. So I think my frontpage
extensions may be corrupted.
Stefan, does your suggestion have a chance of corrupting my frontpage
extensions (if they aren't already) like Joe mentioned? If not I will try
that.

Not on your root web, that's why you are creating a subweb just for FTP

PS
Most hosts don't even know FP has a limit in file sizes
The Default is set to 1 MB anonymous uploads.
There is a command that they can run on the server that will increase the anonymous
upload size for a given web site. The command (for all ports) is as follows :

owsadm -o setproperty -pn vti_maxuploadcontentlength -pv 3000000

The Owsadm.exe can be found at C:\Program files\common files\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\50\bin folder.

The size at the end of the line is in bytes.
