Trouble with Add-ins

P

Patty MacDuffie

Hi folks,

I'm having trouble with all sorts of add-ins for Outlook. I've just built
myself a new computer, clean install of Windows and Office, and I'm having
the same issues that I had on the old desktop. I've had these issues on
every clean install of Office 2002 and 2003 and I've never found the cause
or determined a cure. Hoping to glean some insights here.

Mappoint. The button that allows me to pull up a map of a client's address
appears and disappears from Outlook. If I go into Advanced Options
(Tools/Options/Other/Advanced), and go into Com Add-ins, I see Mappoint
there, checked. If I uncheck it, apply, OK, then go back in and check it
again, apply, OK, then it comes back. But it has disappeared every time I
open the program. This was true of Mappoint 2002 and Mappoint 2004. Was
true of Outlook 2002 and 2003. True on old machine, true on new machine.

OneNote power toy. On the old installation, it would disappear off the
toolbar and I'd have to go into the same place (Com Add-ins) and go through
the same procedure of checking and unchecking it and it would come back. On
the new machine, the powertoy won't install at all. It keeps looking for an
non-existent .msi file in the middle of the installation.

Also, under Add-In Manager, Exchange Extensions Property Pages is listed and
checked. Why would this be there? I don't use Exchange, this is a
standalone unicode .pst file. I do also have Windows CE Support listed
there, as I have a Pocket PC I synchronize with it.

Appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

Map point is available when you open a contact. It's on the Actions menu as
Display a Map..... Online help has directions.

Sorry. There is a button on the toolbar for Mappoint right on the Contact's
Property Sheet.

Lee, I don't think you read my initial post. I have Mappoint installed and
it resides as a COM Add-in to Outlook. It places a shortcut icon on the
toolbar of the Contact's property sheet. Sometimes it works, sometimes it
doesn't. Sometimes the icon changes to a text icon of some sort. Then I
have to go into COM Add-ins and disable the Mappoint Add-In, and then
reenable it, and then it works again. I have had this issue with other COM
Add-ins. This is the behavior I want to address, not how to get a map of
somebody's address. What causes this instability, what might be in
conflict, and what can I do about it? This behavior has persisted over
years, over different Office versions, and over different machines that I
own. With each new version of Office, I hope that this will have been
solved, but it hasn't happened yet. Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Patty,

Thanks for your update and clarification. Based on current situation,
please try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

Step 1: Verify whether the issue happens to specific environment

Based on my research and experience, it is possible that program may not be
able to be installed completely or may not work properly depending on
specific system environments. In order to verify it, please build up
another clean Windows with Outlook environment, then verify whether the
issue happens there.

Meanwhile, we can try the following steps in problematic Outlook
workstation.

Step 2: Outlook Profile

Note: A new profile is a new environment for us to use Outlook. To create a
new profile is only for a test to see if the problem is related to the
corrupt profile of Outlook. Creating new profile will not do any damage to
the old profile.

You can refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB)
for more information:

829918 How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918

If the issue persists, please continue with next step.

Step 3: Windows Clean Boot for Windows XP workstation

Please note if this is a Windows 2000 Client, please copy msconfig.exe from
a Windows XP computer.

1. Click Start -> Run-> Input "MSCONFIG" and click OK.
2. Choose the Service tab-> Select "Hide All Microsoft Services"-> click
Disable All.
3. Choose the Startup tab-> click Disable All and click OK.
4. Restart the computer.

If the issue persists, please continue with next step.

Step 4: Windows account.

Please create a new Windows Administrator account in Control Panel. If you
are using Windows XP, you can follow the steps below.

1. Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
2. Click Create a new account.
3. Type a name for the new user account, and then click Next.
4. Click Computer administrator, and then click Create Account.

Please verify the issue and let me know the result at your earliest
convenience. If there is anything unclear, feel free to let me know. Thanks
and have a nice day!

Thanks & Regards,
