trouble with pxl files

When I try to open my Pocket PC *.pxl files in Microsoft Excel, I get a
warning that file is "unrecognized", and doesn't open correctly. I've done
this before in the past, why the problem now? I'm using Excel 2003, and
Pocket Excel. How can I fix this problem>

I don't have a Pocket PC, but I thought that ActiveSync did the conversion
to & fro between pxl and xls files, rather than Excel reading unconverted
pxl files?
