Trouble with the dropdown menu's values

I have populated a dropdown menu by loading the data from an XML document,
now I have a problem of setting the first item to show up on the dropdown
menu when the page loads every time.

example: country: |----------------------| <---- As you can see
here the
| |
first item does not show up
| |
when the page loads
|----------------------|

country: |----------------------|
| United States | <----- this
is what I want to get.
|--------------------- |


I tried setting rules, looked in the properties, reloading it again a large
number of times. But I kept getting the same result, I have also tried other
topics relating to this, but I still have no luck.
