I am working in Word X for Mac Release 1 on OS 10.3.2 on a G5 2G dual
processor. Here's the problem: I am editing a 15-page document that
contains 12 graphics (both photos and vector drawings). I am
attempting to insert captions under the figures and then
cross-reference them in the text. The only way I could find to do this
is as follows: Insert a text box; insert the graphic into the text
box; insert a caption; convert the text box to a frame. This system
worked beautifully for me on a much larger document last week. Today I
am tearing out what few hair I have!!! Everytime I save and reopen,
the document loses track of which numbers go where. Figure captions
numbers will suddenly change and then the cross-references in the text
can no longer see them so the text is full of "Error! Reference source
not found" messages. I have carefully gone through to make sure I have
set everything up correctly ... and I have. Another odd thing is when
I try to apply a style to the caption, it pops it out of the frame and
sticks it into the middle of the text on that page. The final straw is
that the last time I opened the document suddenly all of the figure
names, which had been labeled "Figure 1," "Figure 2," and so on, had
mysteriously lost the word "Figure" and only the number shows up in
both the caption and the cross-reference in the text.
