Trying to install Office 2000 updates freezes when checking CD source.

Hello.

I have this old Toshiba Satellite notebook running Windows 98 SE (all
critical updates) and Office 2000 SP3 Premium. I am trying to download
the latest two updates (one for PowerPoint and one for Outlook). Every
time Office Update checks for the inserted Office 2000 Premium CD #1, it
freezes and Windows 98 becomes unresponsive (mouse cursor still can
move, but no clicking). Ctrl-alt-del would result a blue screen and have
to hard reset to reboot.

How can I install the latest updates without the CD #1 or from the HDD?
I have to use the CD either way for smaller patches or bigger
patches. Thank you in advance. :)

Hi, Ant,

Have you tried to re-install / repair your Office installation using that
CD? Could the CD itself be corrupt, or the drive?

No. However, I managed get it to work after copying the CD files and
directories/folders to the HDD. I ejected the CD and ran the updates.
The updater asked for the CD source and I pointed it to the HDD
(data.msi). That worked. I wasted 500 MB of disk space, but it worked.

I had NO problems reading the CD even though it took almost ten minutes
to copy (old notebook and DVD-ROM drive).
