Trying to open MS Project file

Hi all,

One of mt friend created a file for my work in MS Project I exactly not
aware in which version he created but when I look into the file by opening it
into WordPad its show MSProject.9.0

I tried to open that file in version 98 and 2002 but still unable to open,
everytime I got messages

- check that file name and path are correct
- check that file format is recognized by Microsoft Project
- files saved in a version earlier then Microsoft Project 98 cannot be opened

This file is of utmost importance, and I am worry what should I do.

Thanks.

Sorry, but it appears as though the file is corrupted. Can you ask your
friend to send you another copy?

Don't know if this is what you did, but if you received the file on
floppy disk, ensure to copy the file onto the hard disk before trying
open it.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

hi,

I got the file on email, the same problem occured on my friends PC.

This thing came into existance when he upgraded to MS Project 2002. I think
he created the file on MS Project 98. He himself is unable to open the file
2002.

When I open the file in WordPad, I saw the contents of the file, the tasks
he created and stuff like that.

Hope, I'll able to recover the file.

Any help kindly appreciated.

Thanks.

Project 2002 can read/write Project 98 files. I do think the upgrade
from 98 to 2002 is a red herring.

Given the file not "openable" in 98 or 2002, I think the file is
corrupted. Hopefully not caused when you inadvertently saved the file
in Wordpad.

Go to a backup copy.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Hi,

What ever I did, I did in a separate folder. The orignal file is remain in a
safe place.

I know from MS Project's prespective the file is not readable, but what I
think that only file creation is not enough, there must be something which
knows how to read the file if corrupted.

The file is in good condition at the time of creation the size was 4MB and
still the size is 4MB, may be some bytes less or more.

Help kindly appreciated.

Thanks.

AFAIK, a corrupted file is a corrupted file. Don't assume that just
because file size is same it's not corrupted. Get your friend to
retrieve from a backup copy.
