Trying to Recover My Website

I

IdahoGent

I recently had a computer crash and my hard drive was trashed. I am now back
up with all the programs loaded including FP. My DOUGSMETALWORK website on
the server is good and I want to download it so I can continue to work on it.
Whenever I go to the remote site area of FP and tell it to publish FROM the
server to the LOCAL computer it does so BUT--- in the HTML code section I
only get 20 lines of code wheras when I do to the server and view source
there is 380 lines of code. I have tried copying the 380 lines and pasting
them into the HTML area on my Local computer but when I save it reverts to
the 20 lines of code again.
When I view the page in the display area the page looks the same as it does
on the internet but I am unable to change the HTML to the 380 lines of code.
I have never heard of this. Is there a hidden area where the remote saves the
HTML code?
Please let me know what I am doing wrong. (I have tried the ctrl Q and paste
but that doesn't seem to work either.)

Have you opened the page on the server in FrontPage? How many lines of
code show there?

If you are using shared borders or any form of includes (SSI, ASP, PHP
or FrontPage) the code for these will not be visible in the FrontPage
code view.

Stefan B Rusynko

You are using shared borders
So much of your "code" is in the shared borders page in the _borders folder
Tools Site Settings Advanced - show hidden folders to see it

Hello Stefan,
I followed the path you memtioned and the 'Show Hidden Folders' box was
already checked.

I opened the _Borders folder and there was a 'top.htm, left.htm and
bottom.htm file in there along with all the navigation buttons for the left
side of the website. None of the files had more than 14 to 20 lines of code
and the code shown was just to draw lines. There were no pictures or text
code in any of the code.

I opened the remote site in front page and the code remains the same as the
code on the local computer.

I still do not understand why the page looks as it should on both the local
and remote sites when the code in the split and code screen only show 20
lines of code.

Hello Ronx,
Thanks for answering. However, the code used to show, even when I added
PayPal pay buttons to the site.

I don't think I am using shared borders and I don't know what you mean by
'includes'. I have been using Frontpage 2003 for the sites and except for the
above mentioned PayPal I don't think I have added any SSI,ASP,or PHP to the
site.

My original problem still exists. Please read Stefan's post below and my
reply to it.

Because you are using FP design tools
(webbot code that generates the html when you save the page in FP)
You cannot edit the generated html, only the options in the webbots used

top.htm, bottom.htm, left.htm are the files associated with shared
borders.
In code view in pages that use shared borders you will see a <meta> tag
just before the </head> tag:

<meta name="Microsoft Border" content="tlb, default">

The code in the shared borders will not be displayed.

Hello Ronx,
I guess I should give you more information but I don't know just what to say
to make myself clear.
The 20 lines of code do not appear on every page. Just on a few. For
instance, I have 19 pages in my site and the full 200 - 400 lines of code
appear on about half of them. The others only display 20 lines of code.

Even if I delete the 20 lines of code and paste in the hundreds of lines of
code which I got from Internet Explorer>page>view source>
ctrl A; ctrl C; ctrl V into the deleted code area of Frontpage 2003. Then
the code appears but when I click on SAVE the source code blanks out and the
20 lines of code reappears.

The webbots and Microsoft comments appear in both styles of pages

I have even tried to start a new page and paste the HTML code into it and
when I SAVE it still reverts to the 20 lines of code.

Is there a box somewhere that has to be checked to turn off this feature?

What do you mean w/u?

I did what you said, Unformated shared borders and all my code appeared.
However, all my pictures and hyperlinks now have the code:

<a
href="file:///C:/WEBSITES/1-WWWROOT-Current%20Websites%20Information/DougsMetalWork/index.htm">Home Page

which is the local computer instead of the:

<a href="index.htm">Home Page

which is the remote server. Is there an easy way to remove the former and
replace it with the latter without going through and doing it one at a time.

Please do not use abbreviations such a w/u in your answers as I do not know
all the meanings. I don't Post very often, in fact this is my first in
several years. THanks for your help, though. Your working with me is very
helpful.
