Turn it off

I would appreciate someone being able to advise me how to turn off numbering
paragraphs completely please?
I dont want a, b, c, or 1, 2, 3 to come up automatically when I am numbering
paragraphs.

I want to number my own paragraphs and tab in when I want to, how I want to,
and add sub paras and little a's and b's when I want, how I want.

Please can someone help?
I just dont want Word's help at all in this respect!

I have searched the help files and the FAQ but cannot figure it out.
