Turn off automatic numbering

When typing a "1." ON starts automatic numbering of paragraphs.
Contrary to Word there is no way to turn it off.
IMO in the Format options there should be a "none".

It's the same with bullet points.

Does anybody know a workaround?

Chances for having this improved?

You could either delay typing the period, a hassle-- 1 entry then go back
to place the period 1. entry

OR choose another separator besides . or ), which trigger the automatic
numbering, such as 1] entry or 1/ entry.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Honestly speaking: I simply cannot not understand why such a basic
thing is missing ...

If you don't want this to happen only for certain paragraphs, you can
undo the autonumbering - just hit ctrl-z after OneNote autonumbers your
paragraph and you'll get back your one with the period.
You can toggle the behavior on and off in
tools->options->editing->"apply numbering/bullets to lists automatically".

Thanks for the valuable hints.
Meanwhile I detected that there appears a "SmartTag" which makes
things even easier. ;-) ;-)

But as have the ear of a developer:
IMO a bit more conformity with Word would not hurt.
a) The "Format" drop-down menu in ON 07 has *two* menu items for
numbering and bullet-points, Word (at least 2003) has both under the
same menu-item.

b) Word opens a dialog box, ON uses the "Task-Area" (my translation
[sorry, my system speaks German]).
The construction in Word IMO is better as less screen real-estate is
used.
This is important especially when using ON on a TabletPC. In portrait
mode things get difficult this way.
And TabletPCs - as to my understanding - are a major area of concern
with ON and a major field in the market.

c) The Word dialog box for the selection of styles for numbering and
bullet points as the first item offers an "empty" style ("none" or
"without", sorry if translated wrong).
I would suggest to add this to the selection of styles in ON too.

AFAICS the latter could not be too difficult and might be implemented
until the Final.

Thanks again

That's the switch he was looking for, I'm willing to bet.

Lost your bet said:
I missed it too.

Yes, I missed it.
Obviously did not look at the "options" carefully enough.
But AFAICS is a problem UI constistency again: The "Options" Dialog is
so much different from what one is used from the general design in
Office 2003.

Yes, missed it. But that was not what I had been looking for ;-)

The switch is useful but I would prefer an *individual* selection made
when needed (such as the Ctr+Z shown by Ilya).
Even better would be: "None" added to the selection of available
styles.

BTW: meanwhile I detected the easiest way:
There's an AutoCorrect SmartTag (showing a "flash") with the help of
which one instantly change the behaviour.

I bet you missed that too >gbg>.
