Turn off automatic smilies ?

I don't mind the fact that MS came up with the feature that would
automatically insert a smile-face when I am trying to type
colon-dash-close parenthesis. No big deal. But can't that feature (and
that specific feature alone) be turned off? The problem is that when
you're using a fairly-small font face, those smilies are
hardly-legible, and kind of an ugly waste. And even if turning off
'AutoComplete' would turn off the smilies, I actually don't mind the
'Date Balloon Tips' and some of the other AutoComplete features---it's
just the SMILE FACES I'd like to turn off!
