Not your problem - just a general rant on the uselessness of bottom posting.

After furious head scratching, Denis asked:
| Milly - I have never used this system before. If I have done
| something wrong, I apologize. I gather the way I respnded was in
| error. Hopefully this is correct. I thank M.F. for staying with me as
| long as he/she did. I never did get a final reply. I hope my
| conclusions are correct but come away with some uncertainty. If you
| would at least confirm that bottom posting is what I am not now
| doing, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

|||| ||||||||| I set an auto-reply while on vacation several months ago and
||||||||| have been unable
||||||||| to turn it off ever since. I use Outlook 2003 and my ISP is
||||||||| cox.net for the
||||||||| email address in question. Cox claims to have no auto-reply
||||||||| function so it
||||||||| must be in the Outlook somewhere. Please, please, help me find
||||||||| how to
||||||||| turn it off!
||||||||
|||||||| Tools - Rules and Alerts is the most likely place.
||||||||
|||||||| To be 100% sure it's not Outlook, shut it down, open up task
|||||||| manager (control-shift-escape) to make sure outlook.exe not
|||||||| running on the Processes
|||||||| list, fire up hotmail or gmail or whatever free web based mail
|||||||| address you
|||||||| might have (create a new hotmail account if you need it) and
|||||||| mail yourself.
|||||||| If you get an autoreply, it isn't from Outlook.
|||||||
||||||| f.h. - I have several email accounts with Goddaddy that are
||||||| fine. Cox is
||||||| my high speed provider. They say they don't even have the
||||||| function of auto-reply. Outlook help suggests they do have
||||||| auto-reply, but it is not
||||||| in rules as they suggest. Nor can I find it any other Outlook
||||||| related areas.
||||||| One hint says be in "Mail" and on the tools menu click "Out of
||||||| Office Assitant" - that won't work for me since I do not use an
||||||| Exchange Server, I have a
||||||| PoP3 account with Cox and several with Godaddy. Sorry I didn't
||||||| make that
||||||| clearer in the original question.
||||||
|||||| So is this account a cox.net address? Rules is the only place it
|||||| would be
|||||| within Outlook unless you have an add-in of some kind. Have you
|||||| gone through the steps I suggested to ensure that it is indeed
|||||| Outlook (or something in it) causing the auto-reply?
|||||
||||| Yes, this is a cox.net address (
[email protected]). Don't recall
||||| an add-in.
||||| Looked at current add-ins suggested in Outlook help and could not
||||| find any listed in my Control Panel Add/delete programs. I can run
||||| Email Acct test on
||||| all other email accts I have active and none auto reply except the
||||| cox.net email. But since I know that I used the Godaddy auto-reply
||||| for all others, and turned them off, that wouldn't be too
||||| surprising. The cox address would
||||| be the only one that I would have used either Cox (they claim no
||||| auto reply
||||| in their system) or OUtlook. Either they are lying, don't know
||||| (wonder, sometimes), or they used to have it and I was too late to
||||| turn it off. The hunt continues.
||||
|||| And when you did the test, you were *not* running Outlook at the
|||| time, correct?
||||
|||| Because if you weren't, obviously it isn't an Outlook issue.
||||
|||| That said, look at the headers of the auto-reply. Look at the last
|||| Recieved: header reading from the top down. That will say where
|||| the message came from initially.

||||
||||
||| Oops, sorry. The test I referred to is setting up an email account
||| in outlook. I will try your "shut down, run Hotmail test" but for
||| reasons in last response, do think it is Outlook. Will advise.
