Turn off (stop) automatic linking for email messages

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) After repeated occurrences of corruption to the Microsoft Identity database, in Office 2008, I'm convinced that I am most likely able to keep a robust database by eliminating all item links. I've noticed that all email messages which are replies to messages I've sent automatically become linked to the original messages. Is there a way for me to turn that function off (stop it from happening) so that no such links are created automatically? Thanks.

All linking can be disabled under Entourage menu --> Preferences... -->
General Preferences --> Address Book.

Hope this helps!

No, that didn't do it. I made sure none of the boxes in that preference item were checked, but replies to my messages sent through my Exchange account are all still automatically linked to the original and all subsequent replies.

Now I've discovered that when I manually remove links in the Entourage client, that change does not apparently get synchronized with the server. I thought that the function was a function of Entourage, but apparently the linking is done on the server. It's an Exchange 2003 server. Is there a chance I can turn off the automatic liniking through some preference controled by the Windows Outlook client? I really need to be able to empty my cache for local Exchange account folders without having the links re-added when the server-stored messages are redownloaded. Thanks.

No, linking in Entourage is an Entourage-only feature. Links do not sync
to your server.

If you're referring to "reply" messages being linked to the original
message, I don't believe that can be disabled.

Thanks.

It may be true that the linking feature is Entourage-only, but it would appear that characteristics of messages stored on the Server are interpreted by Entourage as mandates to create links, because after links are removed in Entourage, synching to server restores them. In other words, apparently this information, the information related to the automatic linking of "reply" messages, is only sent one way, from server to client, because no changes made on the client side seem to permanently affect this link status. Because the initial link creation can't be disabled, it would be helpful if changes to the link status were recognized by the server as a change to an item's information so that manual link removal isn't countermanded by the next synch operation.

Exchange messages contain "Conversation" header information, which
Entourage is probably using.

I'm curious. How are you actually removing links between messages?

With a linked message or note selected in the list, select "Open Links" from Tools menu. Select a link in the "Link To" window. click Remove.
I programmed a QuicKeys shortcut that branches to deal with circumstances as necessary to remove all links from a designated number of messages, the first of which must be selected in the message list. It's a pretty sophisticated shortcut. It would be faster and simpler if I could sort the list by link status.
