You cannot turn this horrid thing off.

Try Continuous View instead of Datasheet View.

You can't. This abominable misfeature was introduced in 2000, and
there's still no way (to my knowledge) to turn it off in datasheets.

It doesn't manifest itself in Continuous Forms, one of several reasons
I prefer them to datasheets.
