Turn on proper fractions?

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Power PC In a message posted here on 2/10/2010: Subj. "Whole number fractions to proper fractions"the answer on how to do this stated: go to Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoCorrect as you type. Be sure that proper fractions is turned on.

I can not find any place to do this at the indicated location.

Is this correct for word 2004?

When I type a whole number fraction followed by a space it autocorrects to a proper fraction. Is this the only way to do this?

'Proper' fractions is turned ON by default in Word 2004 & according to your
last paragraph that seems to be the case for you. For that reason I'm not
sure exactly what you are asking, but you've misquoted the post a bit,
combined with a bug in 2004 that never has been corrected.

The dialog referred to is "Auto*Format* As You Type", but even so the
preference setting for Fractions is missing. It was omitted form the dialog
panel. All that means is that if you use the AutoCorrect Options button
[which appears in the document when an automatic correction is made] to turn
the feature OFF there is no simple way to turn it back ON again.

Keep in mind, though, that even with the feature enabled it does not convert
*every* fraction you might type. Common values such as 1/2 & 1/4 will be
modified but something like 2/5 or 11/64 will not. This is partially due to
font limitations -- the modified fraction is actually a single character &
most fonts do not include very many fraction characters. For a wider range
use the OS X Character Palette to insert fractions.

If what you're asking is how to *not* have the fractions converted, simply
click the Undo button or press Command+Z immediately after a conversion
occurs.

what I did when I need to properly format fractions for some recipes I have on my website was type fractions on separate lines on the ones that format properly 1/2 and 1/4 then type other fractions that don't format correctly (all on separate lines) then I used format painter and formatted all the fractions that were not formatted correctly then I copied then one at a time and added them to auto correct typing first the way it shows typed normally then on the other side (change to: ) and pasted in the properly formatted version. now when I type those fractions 3/8, 1/5 and so on they fomat themselves correctly.
