Turning Layers off and On

I'm new to visio and was trying to turn off layers on a building digram. I go
into layer properties and de-select visible but the layer is still there. Any
ideas?

consider right click the page => select view => select layer properties

Thanks for the suggestion but that does not turn the layers off, The drawing
flashes but the itesm are still visible.

are the items on more than one level?

Thanks for the response I got it to work it seems i had to turn off all
layers and then turn them on one by one. So it works now appreciate the help.
