Turning off automatic hypen parsing

Take the following text:

"hydro-plane sport test"

I want to delete the text "plane ", INCLUDING the space after it so that the
result would look like:

"hydro-sport test"

If I select that text and try to delete it, Word forces an automatic space
after the hypen foiling my editing attempts so that it looks like:

"hydro- sport test"

How do I turn that feature off? I'm trying to do this with macros for a
massive about of editing, and I cannot seem to turn this automation off. What
can I do?

If you use the replace function to replace plane[space] with nothing then
there is no problem and as you intend to do this from a macro, there is no
need to press the delete key!

I've tried it using a macro to select and delete it. I doesn't work for me.
Manual search and replace might work, but select and delete does not. The
problem is that I am not looking for explicit text to delete. When I am using
the macro, it's done by character count. I can actually watch the macro
select the block of text when I single step through the code, but somehow it
doesn't prevent Word from inserting another space.

Without seeing your code it is difficult to suggest a workaround, but I am
killing time waiting for a flight to go on holiday so will not be around to
