Turning off line numbering

I'm using XP Word 2002

Every time I enter two carriage returns WORD starts a
numbered list and I have to turn it off. Over and over.
Is there a way to turn off the autonumbering feature for
good. I'm a programmer, not a writer. I just want to get
my documentation finished.

In Word, click on Tools | Autocorrect Options | Autoformat as you Type |
uncheck the "Automatic numbered lists" box. As a preemptive measure
while you're here, you might want to uncheck the "Automatic bulleted
lists" box too.
