turning off nonprinting characters

Hi, I accidentally used a shortcut that enabled nonprinting
characters. I have done this accidentally before and was able to turn
it off luckily with some keyboard shortcut. But now I have forgotten
what I did to turn it off, and now everytime I use word, the
nonprinting characters pop up again.

I know that I can go to preferences and uncheck the "All" under
nonprinting characters but that only works TEMPORARILY and every time
I open a new document, nonprinting characters pop up again.

Will you please help me?????

thank you very much for your time!

There's the pilcrow icon in your standard toolbar, the one that looks like
an reversed P (¶). If you click on that icon, the non-printing characters
will disappear. The corresponding keyboard shortcut is Cmd+8, by the way.
