Turning off security in Access

S

Suzette

I tried turning on security in Access because I needed to test how it works.
Now it appears I'm stuck with it. I can't seem to find anything about
turning it off.

Help?

Thanks

Tell us what you did. By security, people often mean about 3 different
things in Access.

Well, let's see... I'm going to give you a play by play to make sure I give
you the correct information.

First I went to Security / User and Group Accounts
Then I set up a group then two users.

Next I went to Security / User and Group Permissions and set up which users
/ groups had access to what.

I was quite pleased with myself for figuring this out until I realized that
I now have security for all databases. Now I would like to make it all go
away but of course, I can't seem to find out how. That will teach me!

Thanks

I find an answer.

You have modified the System.mdw which affect all databases when open from
your PC.

Depending on how you set up the users / groups / permission (I hope you
write down all the passwords) but try extracting the System.mdw from the
Office / Access installation CD (or copy it from another PC where the user
hasn't played with Access security) and replace the one on you PC with it.

Note: you may have more than 1 System.mdw on your PC. In this case, use the
file wrkgadm.exe (?) to find out which copy your PC is linked to.

Hi Suzette,

You should download the Access Security FAQ from Microsoft, and practice on a copy of your
database. And keep a back-up of your system.mdw file as well.

This document covers through Access 2000, but it is equally good for Access 2002 and I
suspect 2003 as well.
