Turning off task pane at startup

Ive looked everywhere but cant seem to find where to turn
off the task pane at startup. Whenever a .doc is opened,
the task pane opens too and I dont want to have the task
pane open.

There is a check box at the bottom of the task pane for "Show at startup."
Clear this check box.

THERE IS NO CHECK BOX "SHOW AT STARTUP" IN WORD 2003! I've seen that box in other versions of word, but not 2003.
