two combo boxes and multiple primary key / duplicates

Hi folks

Form being used to enter results. First drop-down lists events, second drop-down is then enabled and only shows the attendes from that event. That's OK. Problem is duplicates
If the user enters the same person twice, they only receive the error message "Duplicate record...." when they move to the next record. The form actually 4 pages, so this doesn't appear straight away, which is a big pain

How can I check for duplicate values as soon as the user selects the second drop-down menu, or as soon as they click out of the field
