Is anyone else having trouble with this?

I have my laptop connected to another display, and when I work on word
(or excel), I like to have the document open as well as the toolbars
on the larger display. When I disconnect the display and take my
laptop home, then open word again, the toolbars are gone because they
still think they're on the other display. Is there a fast way to make
sure that when I disconnect my display and shut down word, all the
toolbars will return to the laptop's display?

I know I can mirror the displays and never have this problem, but then
my resolution will be a problem on the larger display (I guess my
macbook can only allow for its maximum resolution, which is
insufficient for the display).

Thanks in advance!

Does this only happen with Word, or with other programs as well?

Do you shut down you laptop before you disconnect / connect the second
screen?

You don't mention what version of Word you are using. If it's Word 2004, you
might find some interest in a short article that deals with having a second
set of toolbars when you connect to the external screen. Word is quite
clever at detecting the second screen and the second set of toolbars don't
appear when only the laptop's screen is operating. The article is titled "If
you operate with a second screen"; it's on page 188 of some notes on the way
I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available
as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

If you're using an earlier or later version, your situation may be different
from mine -- but the shut-down, as mentioned, is important.
