Two dots for every space I type in normal view

I have tried turning on and off the formatting using show formatting on the
toolbar and have examined the view options but I cannot seem to change this.

When I type text it looks like:
A..quick..brown..fox..jumped..over..the..lazy..cow.

When I typed:
A quick brown fox jumped over the lazy cow.

When printed it looks okay.

In Word 2003 or earlier, click on Tools | Options | View tab | uncheck
the "All" and "Spaces" boxes | OK. See

I tried that but it did not work. Note the following; the dots I see look
like this:

the..quick..brown

The format dots you refer to are single and about 2/3 the height of the
font, the ones I see are low down and in pairs. They apear in the doc when I
type as follows:

First I type The<space> and get The. then I ad the q and this apears The..q
