Two randoms bugs (cannot save and random crash)

Francis Dufour

Hello,

I have two randoms bugs with Mac Powerpoint 2004 on OS X 10.4.

The first is that sometime, PP don't want to save the the file when I ask to
save. It says : "There was an error accessing [file's path]". If I ask
again to save, it asks me to save on another name because the file is read
only (it's not, the file is writable by the user).

The files are saved on the local hard drive. Before I save, I see the file
with the Finder, but after I hit "save", the file disappear and I only see a
temporarily powerpoint file. The file come back when I saved as and the
temp file is removed.

This happen after 3 or 4 saves on the same file (but not on all documents).
If I don't save as, I close the document and I reopen it, I cannot save, the
bug I still here and I must save as if I want save my work again.

I searched on Internet and I only found norton and networked file system
issues. Theses problems don't apply to me, I don't use norton and my files
are saved on the local hard drive.

The seconds bug is a random crash. While working on a document, PP will
crash and will not recover the last opened document when PP is restarted. I
don't have more information about this crash for now.

These two bugs was reproduced on two Mac with the same software version.
Any fix for them ?

Thanks.

Hello Francis,

What exact version of PowerPoint are you running? Do the problems go away
if you prevent Spotlight from indexing the folder where you're saving to?
To do this, go to System Prefernces->Spotlight->Privacy.

As for the crash, if you could come up w/repro steps, that would be great.
Also, can you post or email me (remove the online. after the @ sign) the
crash log from Microsoft Error Reporting?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hello,

You found it. Seem to be that.. I hope :).

For my version, it's 2004.

I will repost when PP will crash again.

Thanks.

Hello Francis,

Just for reference and the benefit of others here, 2004 isn't specific
enough. We've released Office 2004 11.0, 11.1, 11.1.1, 11.2 and 11.2.1
[although nothing changed in PowerPoint w/11.2.1 compared to 11.2]. You can
find out the version and build number by going to PowerPoint > About
PowerPoint.

To reduce turnaround time, it's generally a good idea to include this
information when reporting problems.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hello Olly,

Which problem are you having? Errors on saving or random crashes?

If you're hitting errors on saving, are you running an antivirus program and
are you saving to a local disk? If the answer is yes to both, try disabling
"auto-protect" or whatever the equivalent is in your antivirus software.

If you're hitting crashes, please post or email me (remove the online. part
after the @ sign) the Microsoft Error Reporting crash logs so that we can
investigate.

Thanks,
Andrew
