Two side printing is offset

I still run MS Publisher 97 (love it). Every thing works fine. However, when
I print on both sides of a paper, prints are offset by about 0.25". What
causes this offset? How to correct this problem and make both prints to be
printed exactly within the same space on both sides?

Are you using a duplex unit?

I have a Publisher tutorial about printing back to back. If you send me your
email address I will send it to you as a PDF.

Dear Mary,
first of all, I'm happy to see you here again! Apparently, I wasn't around
for a while and didn't notice your return... As a matter of fact, long ago,
you told me about a problem you had printing some logo on both sides... I do
remember the fact, but not the solution. Since I could not find your
tutorial (maybe you didn't send it then), I sure will appreciate it this
time.
Again, glad you're well and back!

Mary,
thank you very much for your tutorial. Speaking about a vertical flip, sure
it works fine. I noticed it before, there is good vertical alignment.
However, in my publication, the horizontal printing is offset about 0.25".
And this drives me crazy... I'll try your suggestion about duplex. Hope it
will work on all 252 pages I have...
Thanks again for your help.

Have you checked that your document is horizontrally central on the page in
Publisher? And have you checked whether or not your own specific printer is
lying about its unprintable margins (plenty of info on that if you browse
the group)? And does the paper you have physically placed in the intray
match the paper size in your printer dialogue (A4, US Letter or whatever)?
And are you unfortunate enough to be using a HP inkjet printer?

MoMo, thanks for all your questions! I'll try to answer them all as best as
I can below

It is not exactly central, but all 252 pages of this document are of the
same size, same margins, etc. When I designed the page, I checked the box
Create Two Backgrounds with Mirrored Guides. So presumably both odd and even
pages must match each other. Since I use Booklet printing, I have two pages
of the document on each side of a paper sheet. The virtual division line
between the pages is central

And have you checked whether or not your own specific printer is

No I did not. But how could it affect the position of the text on both
sides? I presume that the printer's unprintable margins are the same on odd
and even pages, so they should not cause the offset (I think). Moreover, my
document has ample margins (at least 1.25") on all sides.

Yes, I always use Letter size.
And are you unfortunate enough to be using a HP inkjet printer?
No, I have Canon BJC-2100

I jumped into this thread half way through and I just assumed that you were
printing the pages on both sides of the paper (so that each piece of paper
ended up with an odd numbered page on one side and an even numbered page on
the other side). Is that not what you are doing? Because if it is, and if
the left margin is perhaps greater than the right margin then when you hold
the finished page up to a light then the front and back will not appear
aligned. Or is that not your specific problem?

Moreover, my

I am under the impression back to back printing we are addressing here means the
back lines up exactly with the front.

If you have a creation on the front and want it to line up with the same
creation on the back, a normal turn the page over will not work.

Maureen,
your assumption is correct, I'm printing a large publication on both sides
of the paper. My main concern are even and odd text pages which are not
aligned horizontally. Since ink bleeds through, they look not pretty. The
left and right margins are the same 1.25".
I'm leaving for about 2 weeks, so will not be able to communicate.

Ilya

Mary,
I never could imagine that this is so complicated problem. I thought that a
simple adjustment in settings could do the trick... Boy, was I wrong...
Anyway, I have a rather large publications (252 pages), text and
illustrations. All pages are set with Left/Right Margins 1.25", Top/Bottom
Margins 1.0". I use Canon BJC-2100 printer and Booklet printing (four pages
of publication on both sides of a Letter sheet of paper). The printed pages
are well aligned vertically on both sides of paper. However, the horizontal
alignment is off about 0.25". And since I have many pages to print (and ink
bleeds on all of them), all of them look ugly.
Is there any adjustment of margins, of paper size, etc. to be made to fool
the printer and Publisher and have them align both sides exactly?
In a few minutes I'm leaving for two weeks and will not be able to respond.
All the best,
Ilya
