type 3 errors

I have a Mac G3 Platinum, running os 9.2.1, with 576Mb RAM. Recently, every
Powerpoint file I download from the internet (presumably all Windows-based
files--I identified one as such) starts up, then I see a Graphics filter
converting a whole bunch of metafiles, and after it finishes PowerPoint
closes with a type 3 error. I've assigned 34Mb to PowerPoint. What is my
problem?

This will explain why you're seeing the "Converting ... " message:

Avoiding "Converting Metafile" dialogs in PowerPoint Mac
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00441.htm

The "fixit" suggestions there won't help much if you can't open the presention
w/o crashing, though, so I'd try:

Shut down all your apps then restart to defrag memory
Allocate all the memory you can to PPT
Try opening one of the problem files again; if you can, then follow the
ungrouping suggestions outlined in the link above.

Try it on the smallest presentation you can that currently provokes the
problem.
