Type .mix Picture It! files

How do I open a .mix file? I believe from what I've read, this is a
Microsoft Picture It! picture file. I have tried inserting it into a Word
2000 document, and Word responds with "error in file ..." message after I
click OK on the Convert from .mix file type option. The file thumbnail shows
an image of the picture so I know Office (or Windows) recognizes the
extension. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.

*.mix is a variation of the *.fpx format. Microsoft Picture It did use the
*.mix format. Microsoft Digital Image 2006 should open most *.mix files.

As I recall, Office 2000 has a graphic converter for *.fpx that will also
work for *.mix but the converter is not installed by default.
Run Office 2000 setup {if you just have Word 2000, run Word setup} and look
under graphic converters for a *.fpx converter and install it.

OK, I've got it installed; now do I insert it into a Word doc? If so, it
doesn't work either.

The converter is installed in Word not in a template for a Word document. To
insert a *.mix in Word 2000 I {years ago, so consider the directions general
as Microsoft keeps changing the menus} used the Word 2000 Insert menu and
selected Picture from a file. Browse to the folder containing the *.mix
image and select the image wanted.

If you used the Word Insert menu and the process did not work, what
happened? Any error messages? While I am not sure it is required, did you
restart your computer after installing the fpx converter?

The file is a .mix file. When I Insert the file into Word, I select the .mix
file. I then get a "Convert File" option window which says Convert File From:
and then the dropdown lists both FPX and Picture It! formats, along with
other types. When I select either FPX and Picture It!, I get an error message
"An error ocurred while importing this file. .." with the file name shown.

Hi Harry

There is more than one flavor of MS .Mix file. A multi-plane version and a 'flattened' version. The Multi-plane version is the one
that was used by MS Office 2000's Photodraw application and trying to insert those can produce the error message. The 'flattened'
version (which is basically a 'finished'/non-editable version) is usually the one that can be imported through Insert=>Picture), but
that can depend on the version of the import MIX/FPX (FlashPix) filter (FPX32.flt) that you have as well.

While MS discontinued the Photodraw, ImageComposer and PictureIt products they have, so far, refused to provide information on the
..MIX format (Microsoft Image eXtensions) so that graphics converters or viewers can handle the format when it's not a flattened
file. The program from http://imageconverterplus.com is fairly good at opening/converting the 'flattened' mix files.

If you know the person who sent/created the file it may be a quicker route to contact them and ask them to export the graphic into a
JPG or other more commonly accessible format and resend it to you.
