How do I type over existing text in a document, i.e. replace existing text by typing over it with my new text. I want to do this instead of have it respond as if I want to insert my new text along with the existing text. I want to typeover the existing text.

There are two ways of doing this:

* in Word 2004, click on the OVR button in the status bar at the bottom of a
document window.

* in Word 2004 and 2008, go to Word>Preferences, Edit and activate Overtype
modus.

Thank you Michel, Word 2008 does not have the OVR button in the Status Bar and I reuse many of our form documents daily, with changing only the name, address and date. Thank you again for telling us how to Overtype in Word 2008. Very helpful!!!!!

there used to be a toggle button on the status bar below that let me switch between insert and type over - but I lost it and can't get it back!!! anyone know how to get it back?

Hello Kristen -

You've resurrected a dead series of messages - 3 months without activity -
without any indication of what version of Word you're using or anything
else. In this case that makes a big difference. Also, if you could find the
original question you should have been able to also find the answer that
came right after it

It that answer doesn't resolve your issue it must be a different problem, so
post a new message & include all details. Someone will be glad to assist.

I'm new to Mac, so forgive me if this sounds petulant, but ... isn't there any way to quickly switch between modes? My PC just had a toggle key on the keyboard. I frequently have to do both while editing a single document, and this seems way too much work. It's the first thing I've found that's not easier than the old PC, but it's a biggie for me.

welcome to the Mac!

Go into View | Customize Toolbar. Click on Commands. In the left
column, select All Commands, tab to right column, hit O to jump to the
O-section, find the Overtype command, and drag it onto a toolbar. (If
you want to change the icon, right-click on it and select Properties).

Exit out of the Customize dialog.

Now you can toggle it just like you do the Bold button.

Note: to right-click on the Mac, you can hold down control while clicking.

Or you can go one step further than what Daiya suggested...

In the same dialog hit the Keyboard button, select All Commands from the
left list, select Overtype from the right list & assign a keyboard shortcut
to toggle it on/off.
