Word automatically writes over stuff im trying to correct, but it deletes the
next letter constantly as im going along. what can i do to stop it?

Press the Insert key once.

Hit your "insert" key, that will fix the problem. Insert key is located near
the delete/home/pageup/end buttons.

When you select the insert key, it will allow you to insert characters, when
you select it again it will turn this function off.
