Typeover/Insert

It used to be that when the typeover function was activated a word like
"Insert" or something would appear at the bottom of the Word screen and then
disappear when the function was de-activated. This is no longer the case,
but I want to know whether or not I will type over existing text or not, so I
want it to appear. How do I accomplish this? Thank you.

Does that mean you recently switched to Word2007? Right-click on the
status bar (at the bottom) and turn on the "Overtype" indicator.

If, as Mr. Daniels' is trying to determine, you are now using Word
2007 then his answer is correct. There is also the possibility that
you are still using and earlier version and you don't have your status
bar displayed. Tools>Options>View>Show>Status bar
