I can't compare directly to WordPerfect because I haven't kept up with the
program for several versions... It hasn't even been supplied for Mac in well
over 5 years. The type of settings you're referring to primarily apply to
mono-spaced fonts. However, contemporary text-based programs have used
proportionally spaced fonts for quite some time. The horizontal & vertical
spacing is controlled by the designer of the font predicated on typesetting
standards. The degree of control provided varies with the program being
used.
Unless using a professional caliber publishing app - such as QuarkXPress or
InDesign - there is not much latitude with regard to horizontal spacing. The
control the user does have is normally based on general 'expand'/'condense'
algorithms which pull characters closer together or force them further apart
using preset percentages. Word does provide 1/10 pt. increments which you'll
find in the dialog Phillip guided you to. You cannot regulate the width of a
'space' [although you can insert em/en-spaces where required] nor can you
control kerning of character pairs [other than kerning on/off].
Word does not provide any regulation of a "baseline grid" which is necessary
for line height. This tutorial on Suzanne Barnhill's site will give you
fuller explanation & suggestions, but it isn't going to provide what I think
you may be trying to accomplish.
