Typing a Font Character by using the Unicode Number

How do I do this? Word help says that this is possible.

How do I do this? Word help says that this is possible.

The normal way to do this is to go to system prefs/international/input
menu, check the box for the Unicode Hex layout, plus the box for "show
input menu in Finder," then select Unicode Hex in the "flag" menu at
the top right of the Finder. If you hold down the option/alt key and
type the Unicode hex, you should see the character.
