Typing in new MS Word documents

Charles Varner

Whenever I open a new Word document, there is always some typing on the page
that opens. It is always the same typing, and is the text of some letter I
once wrote. Evidently I accidentally set some parameter that causes this.
How can I un-set it?

Try this:

open blank document
delete noxious text
Click on File | Save as
Set "save as type" box to "doct template."
Highlight "normal.dot"
Press ctrl-C
Press ctrl-V
Now save blank doct to "Normal.dot" with file type in "save as type" box set
to "doct template."

Periodically saving a copy of Normal.dot, btw, is good for your mental
health in direct proportion to the extent to which you have added time and
creative energy to tweaking Word by adding dictionary entries, adding
quickcorrect entries, etc.

If your template gets corrupted it's convenient, shall we say, to return to
an earlier good version and lose only the intervening embellishments
(sometimes known as "improvements").
