Typing is Slow

In Word 2002, I cannot type my document very quick due to
the cursor delay. Can I speed this up?

Do you have plenty of extra space on your hard drive? Do you have enough RAM
on your PC? When my ol' PC started to get full I found it helped to type my
documents in plain text, without any formatting and then do the formatting
afterwards. I also found that the Normal view worked better than Page Layout
view.

Search and delete *.tmp files (all programs closed of course)

Search for ~* and look for any files with a $ eg ~$Normal. Delete them.

if all else fails, you may need to slim down your Normal.dot ie with Word
closed, rename it to NormalOld.dot so that a new version is created. Copy
styles, macros etc from NormalOld using the Organizer. (If this doesn't help
then you can always delete your new Normal.dot and rename NormalOld.dot to
Normal)

The usual reason for slow response is an out-date graphics driver. Go to the
graphics card manufacturer's Internet site and see if there is a new driver
available.

Have you checked your "keyboard properties" in the Control Panel and
adjusted the repeat rate?
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Keyboard (if your using WindowsXP classic view)
Click on "Speed" and see if you can "shorten" the keyboard repeat rate. The
default in Windows is a slight delay.

I just learned something, repeat rate has nothing to do with
the cursor! I had absolutely no idea what a repeat rate
was. Mine is set to high and the delay is short... cursor
is about 3/4 of the way up.

Good ideas! We have some old, very small HD (5 GIG or less)
computers at school that need to be goosed. I'll try your
suggestions on them.
