Typing noticeably lagging behind

On several occasions, I have looked up at the screen and noticed my typed was lagging significantly behind (by 3-4 letters). Is there some reason for this? it doesn't happen in any other program of which I'm aware. Backspacing also displays similar behavior, deleting maybe 2-3 letter a second. What's going on?
