typing on top of lines

I am sent many documents for school that require me to type in them. Many times there are lines in the document where I should type something (i.e. Name: _________________). Is there a way to type on top of the line without replacing/deleting it? It would be so much easier if I could type on top of the line without having to delete it and then type in underline because I have to complete so many documents that already come with the lines put in. Thanks.

In Word it's called overtype mode. You can customize your toolbar to
add a toggle to turn the overtype mode on and off. When you need to
fill in a blank (_______) turn on the overtype mode and underline mode,
click at the beginning and start typing. Just remember to turn it off
before you start wiping out things other than the blank.

If you underline what you have typed, that will fix it.

If you do not underline what you have typed, the person who wants the form
will find it a lot easier to read.

Your choice!

Cheers

Just a variation on the other replies:

Activating Overtype mode in Word 2008 is a PITA - unless you are one of
those who use it frequently enough to have assigned a keystroke to it :)

Assuming the creator used the Underscore character to create the blanks:
Double-click the "blank" in the document to select the underscore, key
Command+U to turn on Underlining, then type your content. Continue to select
& type to fill the blanks, then key Command+U again to turn the Underlining
off when you're done... Alternatively you can use the Underline button on
the Formatting Palette or toolbar if you prefer.

Just an FYI - your problem stems from the fact that whoever created the
document did *not* create a proper FORM. Had they done so it would have been
much easier on those who have to complete a copy. You may want to have a
look at the following article - after which you'll be able to teach the
school something :)
