"typing replaces selection" in the Visual Basic Editor in Excel.

Some how I got in this mode and I don't see the choice in the options tool
bar for choosing an edit mode

Hit the Insert key. You've knocked it and switched overtype on.

Look at the lower right corner of your Excel window on the Status bar.
I expect that you'll see the letters "OVR". Press the Insert key on
the keyboard. The letters will go away and you'll be able to type
normally. You are in overtype mode.
