Typing Unicode Symbols

How do you type a ballot box with a check or a ballot box with an X. The
unicode symbols are 2611 and 2612. I have also, in other applications, been
able to use 9745 and 9746.

I've tried every possible method I can think of, but whenever I use 2611, I
get a 3, 2612 produces a 4. 9745 and 9746 typed using combinations of ALT
and ALT+0 and ALT+U+ all produce symbols but not the checkboxes. I am using
Access 2007.
