ughh.... Office 2004 sp2 (11.2) update error

Let me start this out by saying I'm a PC engineer, I do not do Macs,
but my wife had a G4 and we just upgraded it.

I know I'm not the only one getting this error as I've seen it listed
about a dozen times, but the only people that I see with a solution
have external hard drives.

I've loaded Office 2004 with SP2 Version 11.2 (050714).
I've tried auto update as well as downloading.
and I keep getting the #$%#@ error
"The installer could not locate the correct version of the software
required to install this update. See the Read Me file included with
this install to determine if your software meets the requirements for
this update."

I'm running OS X 10.4.7
I've got 640MB of Ram
I've got a 20GB HD with 11.2 GB of space.

What the hell am I doing wrong?????????

did i say i hate macs????
LOL

thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Hi James -

Do I detect a note of hostility? :)

If your current installation is 11.2.*0* you may be attempting to install
the wrong update (11.2.6, by any chance?).

If this is the case you need to install the 11.2.5 Combo update *first*,
which you can d/l from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/downl
oad/office2004/Office2004_11.2.5.xml&secid=4&ssid=29&flgnosysreq=True

Then install 11.2.6 which is an interim update. Make sure that *no* Office
apps are running when you attempt the updates.

Also, if you recently updated OS X, did you run the Disk Utility - Repair
Disk Permissions routine afterward? If not, you'll find it in the Utilities
folder within the Applications folder. It should be used any time you do a
system update, application update or program install/uninstall.

If this information doesn't resolve it, let us know, including more detail
about your recent upgrade of the G4 -from what to what? Was there a previous
version of Office installed? Have you had the Office Test Drive (trial
version) installed on the system?

Thanks Bob,
I'm just fustrated, bucause I don't do much work on Apple systems and I
figured with 12+ years of PC support I could figure this out.

I have the 11.2.1 update, the 11.2.5 update and the 11.2.6 update
downloaded.
I have tried all three of them and get the same error, I even went back
and downloaded the 11.2 update incase the installer just incase and got
the same error.

I upgraded the machine from OS 10.2 to OS 10.4 and then ran the apple
auto updater which worked flawlessly.

I then installed Office2004 after I deleted the old Office X folder.

I hope this helps.

Thanks again.

Hello again -

It appears that your problem may stem from 2 key points:

1- You make no mention of using Disk Utility at all. Perhaps you're just not
mentioning it, but it is a *necessity* - especially where OS
upgrades/updates & software installs are concerned, and

2- Although you can run different versions of the same program on the Mac,
if you're going to remove one version you need to do so *completely* - and
with the more complex packages just dragging the app folder to the Trash
doesn't get the job done. There are any number of additional files scattered
elsewhere that need to be deleted as well. It's quite likely that 2004
didn't actually install correctly in the first place if you just "deleted"
the Office X folder.

Here's what I suggest:

1- Follow the instructions here;

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/RemoveReinstall.html

.... to *completely* remove all versions of Mac Office. (I'm assuming your
Office 2004 is an outright retail version, not an upgrade package. If your
2004 package is an upgrade you will need a source disk for any prior version
when you reinstall 2004 later in the process.)

2- *Before* you reinstall Office 2004 - between Steps 4 & 5 on the web page
- restart the Mac, empty the Trash, then proceed with Step 5 (launch the
Disk Utility application & run Repair Disk Permissions), and

3- As the admonition in the instruction prolog states, "Don't Skip Steps".

If you're still having problems afterward, come back with as much detail as
you can. Someone will be able to help you resolve any issues.

Thanks again.
I'll see what happens when I return from my business trip, for right
now everything is "working" for her right now. I'd like to get the
security update on there, but for now all is going well. I'll get you
an update this weekend. Thanks again for the suggestions.
