Ugrade

I bought my pc new from Dell with the Preinstalled Small
Business Suite. I decided to upgrade to the office suite
that included Powerpoint and Access. I purchased through
the Microsoft store the "Retail XP Office Professional".
When I tried to install I got error message 1608
"Setup was unable to locate a qualifying product." Am I
out the $329 is paid for the upgrade? Please advise

Office does not support "cross-grade" installations - in other words, adding
the components from a better suite to an existing suite of the same vintage,
in this case, Office XP.

You can try returning the product to Microsoft - I do not know of their
return policy but you can check your receipt and the web site.

You can then contact Dell and request that they provide you with Office
Professional and you return the Office SBE. Dell is usually good about
letting you upgrade to the fuller application for the difference between
what you paid for SBE and their price for Professional.

Well you DON'T have a qualifying product! Have a look at the box - does it
state anywhere that XP SBE qualifies you for an upgrade to Pro - no? Well
you'd better hope that wherever you purchased the upgrade from accepts open
returns. Unless you can find a copy of 2000 or 97 then your upgrade is
useless.

Had you read that article, your post would have been completely unnecessary
because you'd have answered your own question.

Milly and Perdita seem to understand Office, albeit in
different style. Perhaps you could give me a minute ?

I am trying to move all my apps - including Office 97 -
from old IBM laptop (Windows 98) to new computer (Windows
XP). I have the original Office 97 disc & properly
registered, but when I try to reinstall it keeps telling
me that the Office 97 version I have is an "upgrade
version" and it cannot find a "qualifying product".

Someone suggested pointing the wizard back to the Office
97 disc, but that does not work either.

Any good ideas ?

Thanks in advance

.

Then the same applies to you - you *MUST* have had a qualifying product on
the old system (Works 4, Office 4.3 or 95). I've no idea what you mean by
"different style". We are only telling people fact - and, as I stated
before, the same applies to you. You need a qualifying product - if the
installation says it's an upgrade - trust it, it's an upgrade.
