UID Numbers

IN MSP
Each Project with Microsoft Project has a Unique Identifieing Number
(UID)

so 2 different project when printed out will have the same UID number
for different tasks.

IN ENTERPRISE
UID's are still duplicarted when you compare 2 plans as per MSP
problem
..
Does anyone know if Enterprise server has a way of identifying each
individual line within each individual plan as a "Higher Level" UID.

so when comparing multipul plans from EPM there is no confusion with
duplicate UID Numbers ?

thanks in advance

In a Gantt Chart insert the column GUID. Note one benefit of the GUID is
that when you cut and paste a task you get a new UID, but the GUID stays the
same.

Hi

Thanks for the quick response Paul & Gill

1. Does any one know why the GUID number is so complicated ?
(is it some reference to the Projects title plus other identifiable
markers that the user has ie. licence, the date the line added to plan
etc etc)

2. This is very speculative...... Another EPM system somewhere in
the world will not generate the same GUID number due to the above
variences ?

Thanks in Advance

As far as I know, GUID are created randomly, but I assume there is some test
to guarantee uniqueness within a project server environment.

GUID is not guaranteed to be unique, but the probability is very low as it is
based on a time(stamp).
see http://www.petergloor.com/guidgen/default.aspx for some Q&A.

There are 122 random bits (128 - 2 for variant - 4 for version) so this
calculates to 2^122 or 5,316,911,983,139,663,491,615,228,241,121,400,000
possible combinations.
