UML Note Text Stops Working

I have a system where Visio refuses to open up a UML Note icon to allow me to
add or change text. On my laptop, I can double-click on the icon to get a
dialog. I copied the stencil to a desktop and it no longer will open.

If I press F2, I get "Shape protection and/or layer properties prevent
complete execution of this command." I don't have layers defined and I've
turned off all the check boxes in the Format | Protection dialog box. I also
set Macro Security to Low, in case it was using a macro I didn't know about.

I've now poked around for probably two hours looking for some option to turn
on or off that will change this behavior. I tried reconstructing the icon
from a master, but I don't have the right shape to provide it's connector.
I'm getting tired of transferring files from my laptop just to add comments
to the diagrams.

What do I need to do to get the shape to accept text?

Why have you copied the stencil to a desktop?
You have Visio Professional installed on the laptop?
What version is on the desktop, if you need to copy the stencil then
probably not the Professional version.
So, you probably don't have the UML add-on installed on the desktop.

I copied the stencil because I'm using it on the same kind of diagram on both
computers.

The desktop has Visio Standard 2003 SP2 (11.5509.6568) and the laptop has
Visio Professional 2003 SP2 (11.5509.6568).

I transferred the .VSS file and put it in My Shapes. The stencil comes up
and all the icons seem to work normally except for this one.

It's the UML add-on that is missing from Standard.

You would need to install Professional.
