Umlaut display problem

Hi. I've got a peculiar problem. Capital letters when umlauted in, say,
Times, don't display the umlaut, or only faintly. This also affects
diacritics in foreign languages in some cases (esp. in ancient Greek
fonts, in some accent-letter combinations). This has to do with
font-smoothing or rather quartz-smoothing when q-s is enabled.

BUt when I created a new user the problem disappeared.

I'm at a loss to figure out how to narrow down the offending issue.

Any tips?
