Umlauting vowels

E

In Word-2000 no longer can I umlaut vowels and find other useful symbols, by
holding down the ALT key, whilst simultaneously on the numeric keypad
entering three digits. Such as: lowercase o - 148, uppercase O - 153,
lowercase u - 129, degree-temperature - 248, pound sterling(GBP) - 156, and
so on. This still works in OE, and in Works7.0, but not in Word2000.
What has happened? Or more likely what have I done! I consider this
facility pretty snazzy, but there is every liklihood that there is a simpler
and/oor better way of accessing these and similar items. Can anyone help,
please?
