Unabe to run Automatic Office Update

R

RonRuben

I received the following explanations for NOT being able
to run MS Office Update on my PC. Any idea what
the "fix" could be???? It happens every time I try to
run Office Update

Office Update is unable to check for updates Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on
this computer. This may be happening because of one of
the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this
computer.

There is a network problem and the detection catalog used
by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to
the Downloads home page and try running detection again.

Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing
you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result
of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support Services for assistance.

You installed Office updates in the past and then
upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows
Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB
article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source
if Unavailable.

Hey there! I have the same exact problem. The update
worked fine until I installed SP2 for Office XP. Many
people in this newsgroup share our dilemma, however,
noone seems to have a direct answer. EXTREMELY
FRUSTRATING. If you come across a fix, by all means, post
it. Good luck.

I too am having the same problem, but only on one of my
XP computers--both of which are nearly identically
configured, except one has Office XP and the other has
Office 2000. Office Update works fine on the machine with
Office 2000. From what I have uncovered, there appears to
be a synergistic relationship between The Office Update
Utility and the Windows XP Installer Utility. You may not
have been totally aware that one of the recent times that
you checked Windows Update, it asked your permission to
update the Installer--which most of use do! This appears
to be the culprit. There is some type of conflict between
the newer Windows Installer and the Office Update Utility-
-particularly if you have installed XP SP2. I have been
relentlessly looking for a fix on this, but I am getting
nowhere fast. It appears that--at least for now--
Microsoft is either ignorant of the problem or doesn't
have a fix for it.
