Unable to access options other than 'Popular' - Word 2007

System:

Dell Dimension 2900, 4 GB ram, Windows Vista Business (32 bit), Word 2007.

For some reason all the options in Word are inaccessible. Not greyed out -
the icons on the leftlook clickable, but nothing happens when you click. I
googled it and found another thread with the same problem, unfortunately no
answers. Excel 2007 options work fine.

Another symptom is that I cannot double-click a Word doc in explorer and
have it open in Word. I have to go to Word, then File | Open, which works.

I have tried:
- Checked that the default program for .doc? files is Word 2007.
- deleted all NORMAL.dot? files
- uninstalled completely and re-installed
- Applied all patches and updates

All of the above makes no difference. Please help - I am desperately trying
to avoid doing a re-install of the OS.

I am having the same issue with word 2007 (2007 office professional). In
addition to not being able to click on the Word Options other than "popular",
I cannot use my mouse and move the curser to another location within the text
of a word doc. I've reinstalled and downloaded all patches as well with no
luck.

other 2007 apps work fine

Your symptoms sound like a corrupt Word Data Key. Run Regedit and navigate
down to the DATA key. Whilst DATA is selected, press delete. Word will
automatically create a new key when it is restarted. Note that this is
usually caused by an automatic update running whilst Word has been left
running.
