Unable to access system utilities

Something strange is going on with my computer (Compaq Presario 06 running Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600, sp 1.0). After I've been on the computer for a while, for no apparent reason the "My Computer" and "Windows Explorer" icons stop working. I get the hour glass but, after a few seconds, it disappears and nothing happens. The same thing happens when I select the START button on the taskbar and select either of the two options above, as well as the "My Documents", "My Pictures", "My Music" or the "Control Panel" options. Any idea where to start looking for the cause of this trouble?
