Unable to apply Office 2003 Updates

Danny

I am running Office 2003 on a W2K Pro machine. I am unable
to apply the most recent Microsoft Office Updates.

In particular, the updates that failed were: Update for
Outlook 2003: Junk E-mail Filter (KB870765); and Office
2003 Service Pack 1 - English version.

In both instances I was prompted to attempt to bypass the
problem by downloading the full-file install versions of
these updates to my computer and extracting them in order
to perform the update from my local disk.

After downloading these file, this approach also failed on
multiple attempts, displaying the following error message
each time: Error 1327: Invalid Drive: F:\. I suspect this
is related to the fact that Drive F no longer exists on my
recently reconfigured system, so I am at a loss as to what
to do to apply these updates.

My Office programs actually reside on my system disk
(Drive C), so I am confused as to why this error message
would appear. Any guidance and advice would be appreciated.

Danny--

I think this fix will work for you:

Invalid Drive X:\ (Error 1327) when attempting to reinstall Office 2003

Andy Baran's Blog
Office 2003 Error 1327: Invalid drive x

OFF2000: Error 1327 Invalid Drive During Office 2000 Installation

I couldn't find a KB for this error tagged for MOS 2003, and this is the
only one with this error. I think the first two will help. If not, I'd
look for more error messages in Event Viewer>runbox "eventvwr.msc">
Application, or you may have to sent the OHotfix MSI log to someone who can
interpret it. Other troubleshooting steps, like the Windows Installer
Cleanup Utility. I hope things stop with the first two links.

Best,

Danny, I believe you're correct that this is a result of the removal of one
of your drives. My guess is that when you installed Office 2003, the Local
Install Source files were stored on Drive F: (or at least the location
changed when you removed Drive F:). You can use the Local Installation
Source Tool (available from the Office Resource Kit at
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/journ/LISTool.htm) to remove the
incorrect LIS information or to move your Local Install Source to another
drive that will be available. I would recommend that you choose the option
to move the LIS to an available drive location as an intact LIS will
eliminate the need for you to have the CD available when you install future
updates.

You da man, Chad!

Step 1 of your advice led to a fix within minutes. Usually
my heart starts palpatating when I have to mess with the
registry, but in this case the examples you cited were so
straightforward and logical that my nerves were steady as
a rock.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thanks, Sloan. Will do. As a matter of fact, I especially
appreciate you pointing me towards the online Office
Resource Kit. I was not aware of that great treasure trove.
